DEL VALLE, Texas — Tesla's Cyber Rodeo is set to kick off Thursday. As the pseudo-grand opening draws near, the Del Valle Independent School District is looking to improve an already strong relationship by providing more opportunities for its students.
"Our graduating seniors will have the opportunity to interview with Tesla here on April 21, so we're excited," said Alex Torrez, the district's Chief Workforce Officer. "The opportunities, they're limitless."
Students with the school district's first-ever robotics team have been able to pursue their passion of technology while working with their hands.
"I work on cars a lot. This just so happened to blend competition and mechanics together to form a beautiful baby. This is awesome," said Jacob Blanco, a junior at DV High School.
Some robotics students are looking at working at Tesla in some capacity with Giga Texas just two miles down the road from the high school.
Torrez added that, at the end of last school year, Tesla offered 46 graduating seniors opportunities to work at the Gigafactory after going through a 14-week program through Austin Community College.
"They're some of the first employees out there, and we're super proud of that," Torrez said.
In the future, Torrez hopes to grow the partnership with Tesla and DVISD, including field trips and opportunities for elementary and middle school students if they so desire.
With the company's launch party this week, some members of DVISD's administration and board of trustees will be attending the Cyber Rodeo. Torrez has visited the outside of the factory before, but hopes he can soon see the inside for himself for the very first time.
