Taylor ISD breaks ground on new Career and Technical Education facility

Leaders with Samsung handed Taylor ISD a $1 million check to fund the school's expansion. This comes as Samsung is building a semiconductor plant in Taylor.

TAYLOR, Texas — Construction is now underway on a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) facility at Taylor High School. A groundbreaking was held on Tuesday afternoon outside the school.

Leaders with Samsung handed Taylor ISD a $1 million check to fund the school's expansion. This comes as Samsung is building a semiconductor plant in Taylor that will create thousands of jobs.

A senior at Taylor High School, who also interned at Samsung, said it's not just an expansion of the school's CTE program – the new center will change students’ lives.

"I had the opportunity to see the work environment at the semiconductor in Austin, and I loved it," Melanie Badillo said. "I hope that one day after college I will go back and I can work there. And what's even better is that now is that it's in my own backyard."

Taylor ISD said the new center is set to open in the fall of 2025.

The initial $1 million investment will help underwrite equipment, staff and training needed for classrooms, dual-credit labs for coursework, robotics and automation and other manufacturing-related program specifics laboratory for the building, Samsung said.

"This new investment from Samsung Austin Semiconductor underscores our shared commitment to the next generation of advanced manufacturing talent," said Dr. Jennifer Garcia-Edwardsen, superintendent of Taylor ISD. "Our students have enjoyed working as interns and learning about the semiconductor industry. We look forward to our continued long-term partnership in ensuring that our scholars are inspired, equipped and empowered to achieve their unique potential."
