BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — 200 roosters, along with drugs and guns, were seized during a cockfighting ring bust on Saturday, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
After catching wind of the illegal operation, BCSO said they responded to the 26000 block of Sand Cliff Drive in south Bexar County early on Saturday. Upon arrival, deputies were able to seize 200 roosters, guns and then later found drugs in a truck on the property.
Some of the roosters were found in cages with injuries from gaffs, which are described as razor-sharp three-inch blades, that were tied to the legs of other roosters.
Deputies were able to identify Paul Morales as the renter of the property and arrested him for allegedly running the operation.
50 people were reportedly interviewed by investigators and cited with a class C misdemeanor for attending the event.
BCSO said they believe more people would've showed up if they didn't conduct the bust so early but they wanted to get there before anymore roosters could get hurt.
The roosters will reportedly be taken to an undisclosed location where tests will be run on them and after 10 days, officials will decide what to do with them.
Morales is facing a felony charge related to gambling on cockfighting.
