NordVPN – Best VPN Service Overall

Best For Overall
Server Network 6,300+ servers in 111 countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
Max Devices 10
Price Starting from $3.09/month

Why I Picked It

NordVPN is the best choice VPN service in the market currently. With its advanced security features, including dark web monitoring, threat protection, dedicated IP servers, strong dedication to user privacy, and blazing-fast performance, NordVPN stood out from the bunch.

Features

In addition to its Threat Protection and Dark Web features, NordVPN also offers a functional kill switch that works perfectly.  I also enjoyed being able to choose from multiple types of servers, including P2P (which is great for torrenting), double VPN for added security, obfuscated to hide that you’re using a VPN, and a dedicated IP for a dedicated connection.

Of all the features NordVPN offered, an exclusive Meshnet feature – a virtual network that will allow multiple remote devices to connect and communicate with each other from anywhere in the world, stood out the most. Simply put, it allows users to access files on each other’s devices as well as “borrow” said device IP address, making it one of the most versatile VPNs on the market.

Security and Privacy

NordVPN uses NordLynx, an in-house-developed lightweight protocol built on the backbone of WireGuard. It also offers top-level encryptions, like AES-256 and ChaCha20 (with NordLynx), for bulletproof data protection.

To prove its commitment to its users’ privacy, NordVPN uses RAM-only servers that are wiped of data after each reboot. Its no-log policy has been independently audited multiple times, which I always take note of whenever reviewing providers’ user data handling policies.

Other features worth mentioning include its Dark Web Monitoring tool, which scans the internet for any personal information leaks, and Threat Protection, which provides real-time protection against malware and ads. It also, as expected, has a fully functional kill switch in place that worked flawlessly during my testing.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

In comparison to other VPNs, NordVPN has a very large server fleet of 6,300+ servers in 111 countries worldwide. Plus, said servers are mainly owned by NordVPN, making them that much more secure.

The VPN offers obfuscated servers, which make your connection appear as if you’re not using a VPN. This helps you connect to streaming platforms like Netflix, which may be limiting VPN use. For the past four months, I’ve been successfully streaming all F1 races, regardless of where I’m located.

Additionally, due to Smart DNS technology, it is possible to enjoy geo-unblocked content on devices that typically don’t support VPN applications.

Performance

NordVPN boasts about being blazing fast, so I put that claim to the test and performed extensive speed testing throughout the year using the NordLynx protocol.

During my last test in the first week of October, I registered a small 5-10% drop in speed in the nearby locations. Servers located further away saw a bigger drop of up to 20%. However, on average, NordVPN demonstrated 930Mbps speed on a 1Gbps baseline, making it one of the fastest VPNs that I have tested.

Pricing

When it comes to pricing, NordVPN offers three different tiers and multiple billing periods. While each tier offers additional features, the number of simultaneous connections remains the same, allowing you to secure up to ten devices.

24 months + 3 free 12 months 1 month
NordVPN Basic $3.09/month $4.99/month $12.99/month
NordVPN Plus $3.99/month $5.99/month $13.99/month
NordVPN Ultimate $5.99/month $7.99/month $15.99/month
  • Standard – This plan comes with basic VPN functionality and threat protection protection.
  • Plus – This option includes everything in the Standard plan, plus an ad blocker, password manager, premium threat protection, and data breach scanner.
  • Ultimate – Includes everything in the Plus plan, alongside 1TB of file storage and NordLocker file encryption.

NordVPN does not have a free plan; however, you can always test it out with a 7-day free trial on Android or make use of its 30-day money-back guarantee on any of your devices.

Who It's Best For

NordVPN is an excellent premium VPN that excels when it comes to security. Alongside tools like NordVPN’s Meshnet, the package also includes everything from web security tools and a password manager to encrypted storage – providing excellent value for money.

Pros

  • Extensive security an privacy features
  • Excellent connection speeds
  • RAM-only servers
  • Diverse server locations

Cons

  • No free VPN plan

Surfshark – Best Cheap VPN Service

Best For Budget
Server Network 3,200+ servers in 100+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Browser extension
Max Devices Unlimited
Price Starting from $2.19/month

Why I Picked It

Surfshark is one of the best cheap VPNs on the market, and the top provider to offer unlimited simultaneous connections. It also comes with excellent security features, fast connection speeds, and even antivirus functionality, making it an ideal choice for users looking to improve their online security at an affordable rate.

Features

Alongside top-level security features, Surfshark includes a reliable kill switch that, during my latest testing round in October, successfully stopped my internet connection when the VPN went down.

Another notable Surfshark feature is Camouflage, which makes it seem like you’re not using a VPN. You also get features like split tunneling, P2P-friendly servers for torrenting, a MultiHop – a double VPN connection for added security, GPS spoofing on Android, and an IP rotator feature.

Security and Privacy

To ensure top-level data security, Surfshark uses highly secure AES-256 encryption and a speedy WireGuard tunneling protocol. The service operates on RAM-only servers and follows a strict no-log policy that has been independently audited by Deloitte, who confirmed that no user data is being stored.

Surfshark also has numerous other features to enhance your online security. Providers’ CleanWeb tool allows secure, ad- and malware-free web search for more private browsing.

The alternative ID feature enables you to create and use an alternative email and persona online. NoBorder mode supports internet access around the globe, even where VPN use is limited or restricted. And Nexus technology automatically rotates your IP address in the chosen VPN country.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

Surfshark offers 3,200+ servers in over 100 countries worldwide, even including locations like India, Saudi Arabia, and Macau (China).

During my testing, I’ve easily accessed the most popular streaming platforms, like Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu, and enjoyed watching Yellowstone on Netflix, lag free.

Performance

During my latest tests performed in October 2024, Surfshark has demonstrated very consistent speeds of 950Mbps on a 1Gbps baseline.

When using the WireGuard VPN protocol, on average, the provider managed to retain 93.42% of the original download and 87.65% of the upload speed. This makes Surfshark one of the fastest VPN providers on the market.

Pricing

Like NordVPN, Surfshark also offers three different plans. However, it is noticeably more affordable than its competitor. Regardless of which plan and billing term you choose, each subscription secures an unlimited number of devices.

24 months + 3 free 12 months + 3 free 1 month
Surfshark Starter $2.19/month $2.79/month $15.45/month
Surfshark One $2.69/month $3.19/month $15.95/month
Surfshark One+ $4.29/month $5.09/month $17.95/month
  • Surfshark Starter – The starter pack comes with a VPN, adblocker, and an alternative ID.
  • Surfshark One – In addition to the Starter pack, the plan also includes antivirus, data breach alerts, and CleanWeb.
  • Surfshark One+ – Featurewise, you get everything from Surfshark One, plus Incogni data removal service Incogni.

It’s important to note that once the billing term ends, prices will go back to the standard monthly rate. However, if the service isn’t what you expected, Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Who It's Best For

Surfshark offers a superb package with fast connections, excellent security and privacy features, and the option to connect unlimited devices. Best of all, it proved to be a highly secure solution for a budget-friendly price. This makes it a great option for users looking for a high-quality product for a reasonable price.

Pros

  • Excellent VPN speed results
  • Extensive package of security features
  • RAM-only servers
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections

Cons

  • No free plan

ExpressVPN – Best VPN for Security

Best For Security
Server Network 3,000+ servers in 105+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
Max Devices 8
Price Starting from $6.67/month

Why I Picked It

ExpressVPN is a premium, highly security-oriented VPN provider. It comes with a powerful and speedy native protocol, a strong no-log policy, a free password manager, and a private DNS to offer users a high level of security.

Features

ExpressVPN has numerous functionalities that help to keep users’ online activities secure. You can expect to find a reliable kill switch (Express calls it Network Lock) that has successfully passed my testing.

There’s also split tunneling, pre-installed Keys (password manager), and a Threat Manager that helps block trackers and malicious sites.

More so, the provider has its own router applet and MediaStreamer feature that enable you to stream content on devices that aren’t typically compatible with a VPN. While these functions aren’t vital, they do add to your convenience.

Security and Privacy

While WireGuard is a popular protocol option, ExpressVPN uses an in-house-developed alternative, Lightway. The protocol uses the market-standard AES-256 encryption and is just as fast as its counterpart.

Furthermore, like Surfshark and NordVPN, ExpressVPN has an independently audited no-log policy. Third-party audit firms PwC and Cure53 have confirmed that ExpressVPN’s TrustedServer technology, which runs on RAM-only servers, does not collect user data.

The only potential downside is that ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, a company known for previously creating malicious adware. However, it seems that currently the VPN company is heavily focused on cybersecurity and has left its sketchy activities in the past.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

ExpressVPN has more than 3,000 servers in 105 countries worldwide. While some competitors, like NordVPN, offer a larger server fleet (6,300+ servers), ExpressVPN offers quite a few rare locations, including Pakistan, Jersey, and Macau (China).

To test providers’ geo-unblocking capabilities, I tried accessing different content on the most popular streaming sites, like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, and more.

Throughout the testing, I have not encountered any issues and managed to watch Oppenheimer without any lags or quality losses.

Performance

In October 2024, I tested ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol. And I must admit, the results weren’t very impressive. On average, the provider kept only 49.91% of the original download and 52.55% of the upload broadband speed. This left me with 560Mbps speeds on my 1Gbps broadband.

What made these results fairly conflicting was that the provider retained over 75% speed in nearby locations while connected to offshore servers; the number dropped to just 36% at times.

Pricing

ExpressVPN offers additional months free of charge when you subscribe to its long-term subscription plan at $6.67, or you can try it for 1 month for $12.95. Unlike Surfshark, which comes with unlimited connections, ExpressVPN caps simultaneous connections at eight devices.

12 months + 3 free 6 months 1 month
ExpressVPN $6.67/month $9.99/month $12.95/month

While there is no free option, you can test ExpressVPN services risk-free with a 7-day free trial for Android and iOS mobile devices only. Plus, there’s a standard 30-day money-back guarantee in place.

Who It's Best For

ExpressVPN is a premium VPN provider best suited for users seeking for highly secure solution. In addition to robust security features, it also has great tools for secure and private gaming and streaming.

Pros

  • Audited no-logs policy
  • Strong geo-bypassing capabilities
  • No IP leaks were detected
  • Free password manager and threat manager

Cons

  • Free trial available just on mobile devices
  • Eight devices cap
  • Owned by Kape Technologies

Security and Privacy

PureVPN is among the few VPN providers that offer Peer-to-Peer (P2P) optimized network connections integrated into apps for each major platform.

It provides a virtual IP for P2P traffic that keeps your identity confidential, even from your ISP, since the files shared with you go through your VPN-provided IP instead of the ISP-provided address.

That makes it easy to get around regional limitations and avoid bandwidth throttling, and it increases your security while downloading files over the P2P networks with the industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

CyberGhost – Best VPN Provider for Streaming

Best For Streaming
Server Network 11,700+ servers in 100+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
Max Devices 7
Price Starting from $2.19/month

Why I Picked It

CyberGhost is a great daily VPN for streaming geo-restricted content. The service offers a very large server fleet of over 11,700 servers with some being optimized specifically for streaming.

Features

CyberGhost offers quite a few security features, like an automatic kill switch, which I have tested and faced no issues with, an adblocker, and a dedicated IP.

Additionally, this VPN has many types of servers to offer, so users looking to torrent, game, or stream content will definitely have options. Previously, CyberGhost used to have a password manager too.

However, due to user inactivity regarding the tool, it was eventually scrapped. Instead, the provider has developed something much more unique: Smart Rules.

This feature enables users to configure the VPN to their liking. You can make exceptions for sites or apps you’d like to use without a VPN connection. More so, it’s possible to set up an automatic connection to a chosen site whenever you open a particular app or page.

Security and Privacy

Just like my top 3 VPN providers, CyberGhost also uses military-grade AES-256 encryption and provides users with multiple protocol options, including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. In addition, its no-log policy passed an independent audit, confirming that the VPN is not collecting any user data.

Additionally, the provider uses RAM-only NoSpy servers that are fully managed by CyberGhost and are regularly wiped of any user data. However, be mindful that just like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost is also owned by Kape Technology.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

CyberGhost has one of the largest server fleets available on the market, with over 11,700 servers in 100 countries worldwide. Many of them are optimized for streaming specifically.

So I’ve put the dedicated streaming servers to the test and managed to successfully unblock content on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and Disney+. However, it’s worth noting that, due to significant speed reductions, I experienced lagging when streaming HD videos.

Performance

I tested CyberGhost’s connection speed using the WireGuard protocol. During my examination, I registered consistently good speeds from close-by locations (85-90% of the original speed), while farther-away servers struggled to provide good results.

Overall, on average, CyberGhost managed to keep 62.73% of the original download and just 26.33% of the upload speed.

Pricing

You can gain access to CyberGhost’s impressive server fleet of nearly 10,000 servers for just $2.19/month if you opt for its two-year-long plan.

Like Surfshark, CyberGhost rewards first-time users with extra months when they subscribe to its long-term plan. The plan also allows for seven simultaneous connections.

24 months + 2 free 6 months 1 month
CyberGhost $2.19/month $6.99/month $12.99/month

Overall, the provider is fairly affordable, especially compared to ExpressVPN. However, if you’d like to test the provider before making the commitment, it offers a free VPN trial. There are multiple options, actually – a 24-hour trial for Windows and macOS, three days free for Android users, and seven days for iOS.

Now, if you did make the commitment, yet CyberGhost didn’t live up to your expectations, there’s a 45-day money-back guarantee. What’s very unique is that even its 1-month subscription has a money-back guarantee of 14 days.

Who It's Best For

CyberGhost is a great pick for encryption and go-bypassing, making it ideal for streaming geo-specific content from anywhere. Having access to multiple VPN protocols and RAM-only servers means you can be confident in the security of your data too.

Pros

  • 11,700+ servers worldwide
  • Optimized servers for gaming, streaming, and torrenting
  • 45-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Significant speed reduction
  • Limited features
  • Owned by Kape Technologies

ProtonVPN – Best VPN for Privacy-Conscious Users

A logo of Proton VPN

Best For Privacy-conscious users
Server Network 6,400+ servers in 112+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
Max Devices 10
Price Starting from $3.59/month

Why I Picked It

ProtonVPN is the best VPN choice for privacy-conscious users due to its commitment to data protection and transparent operations. Based in Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws, ProtonVPN offers a comprehensive set of security features that prioritize user anonymity and confidentiality.

Features

ProtonVPN offers a Secure Core architecture, a multi-hop system that routes traffic through multiple servers in privacy-friendly countries, significantly reducing the risk of network-based attacks. There’s also a NetShield tool that blocks ads, protects against malware, and filters out potentially dangerous websites.

Its Tor over VPN feature lets you easily route your internet traffic through the Tor network without using the Tor browser. A flexible split tunneling feature allows selective traffic routing through the VPN.

Thanks to the VPN Accelerator, performance isn’t sacrificed for security. It optimizes connection speeds, especially on long-distance servers. However, competitors like NordVPN, with its NordLynx protocol, still generally offer faster speeds across their networks.

Additionally, you can create Customizable Profiles to save specific VPN configurations for quick access. I suggest using this feature to save your most frequently used VPN configurations.

To enhance your viewing experience, ProtonVPN offers Streaming Optimization with dedicated servers for accessing geo-restricted content, while its Alternative Routing feature helps find the fastest server paths.

Security and Privacy

ProtonVPN employs AES-256 encryption and supports leading protocols such as OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard.

An automatic kill switch cuts internet access if the VPN connection drops, while perfect forward secrecy adds an extra layer of protection by regularly changing encryption keys.

Headquartered in Switzerland, ProtonVPN follows a strict no-log policy and benefits from strong privacy laws outside EU and US jurisdictions.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

ProtonVPN has a network of over 6,400 servers spread across 112+ countries. This extensive coverage facilitates reliable access to geo-restricted content from major streaming platforms.

During my tests, ProtonVPN successfully unblocked popular services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video across various regions. However, unlike ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN does not work in China.

Performance

ProtonVPN demonstrated solid performance in my speed tests. In the US, it achieved 90% download and 89% upload speed retention. Other tested locations also showed good results, with download retention ranging from 63% to 84% and upload retention between 66% and 81%.

While the speeds are commendable, some competitors like NordVPN and ExpressVPN may offer faster connections in certain regions. However, ProtonVPN’s performance is sufficient for most online activities, including 4K streaming and large file transfers.

Pricing

ProtonVPN offers three billing terms, the cheapest of which is $3.59/month. There’s also a free plan that provides unlimited bandwidth and access to servers in the US, Romania, Japan, Poland, and the Netherlands.

24-months 12-months 1 month
ProtonVPN $3.59/month $3.99/month $9.99/month

All paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to test the service risk-free. Additionally, ProtonVPN accepts various payment methods, including Bitcoin, further enhancing user privacy.

Who It's Best For

ProtonVPN is ideal for users who prioritize privacy and security. It is particularly suited for journalists, activists, or anyone operating in sensitive environments who require the highest level of online anonymity and data protection.

Pros

  • Strong focus on privacy and security
  • Forever free plan
  • Based in privacy-friendly Switzerland
  • Accepts Bitcoin payments

Cons

  • Limited servers on free plan
  • Steep learning curve

TotalVPN – Best VPN for Online Browsing

TotalVPN logo

Best For Online Browsing
Server Network 50+ servers in 30+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
Max Devices 5
Price Starting from $2.41/month

Why I Picked It

TotalVPN’s Safe Browsing is one of the best VPNs for online browsing due to its powerful combination of antivirus protection and a robust VPN service. It offers seamless, secure browsing with minimal impact on connection speeds.

Features

TotalVPN’s antivirus software allows for real-time threat detection while browsing, adding extra protection against malware and phishing attempts.

TotalVPN includes a WebShield feature, which automatically blocks low-trust websites and crypto-mining URLs. On the other hand, the Smart Scan feature allows users to schedule automated scans for malware, tracking cookies, and junk files, ensuring a clean browsing environment.

The software also offers identity theft protection that monitors your personal information, like credit card details and Social Security numbers, to prevent online fraud.

Additionally, TotalVPN’s System Tune-up tool optimizes your device performance by removing junk files and managing browser history and cookies.

Security and Privacy

TotalVPN utilizes military-grade AES-256 encryption and a kill switch feature to prevent data and real IP leaks.

Additionally, the VPN supports multiple protocols, including OpenVPN and IKEv2. However, I couldn’t find any mention of WireGuard support, which is offered by most competitors and has a reputation for speed and efficiency.

Based in the United Kingdom, TotalVPN falls under the jurisdiction of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. Despite this, the company operates under a strict no-logs policy, which has yet to be validated through an independent third-party audit.

TotalVPN also offers DNS leak protection and WebRTC leak prevention, ensuring that your real IP address remains hidden during browsing sessions.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

TotalVPN’s network comprises over 50 servers across 30+ countries, offering a modest global presence. While smaller than some competitors, this network provides sufficient options for most users’ geo-unblocking needs.

TotalVPN successfully unblocked major streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. However, it lacks obfuscated servers, which limits its effectiveness in countries with strict internet censorship, like Saudi Arabia and China.

Performance

In my testing of TotalVPN, I’ve observed a consistent 30% reduction in download speeds. While noticeable, it still allowed for smooth HD streaming and general browsing.

Upload speeds, however, were more heavily affected, with losses ranging from 62% to 70%. This could concern users who frequently share large files or participate in video calls.

Pricing

TotalVPN has a single plan option, retailing for $29.00 for the first year. The plan includes core antivirus functionalities, a Total Adblock feature, and a standard 30-day money-back guarantee. However, there is no free version.

Who It's Best For

TotalVPN is particularly well-suited for casual browsers who want a strong and affordable VPN and antivirus combo without having to compromise on browsing speed or ease of use.

Pros

  • Integrated antivirus and ad blocker
  • Effective malware protection
  • User-friendly interface
  • Affordable pricing

Cons

  • Limited server network
  • High renewal rate

Price Starting from $1.99/month

Why I Picked It

PrivadoVPN is one of the best VPN services for beginners. Its intuitive and user-friendly interface, straightforward setup, and affordable pricing make it an ideal choice for anyone beginning to use VPNs.

Features

PrivadoVPN offers a beginner-friendly interface across all supported platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. The consistent design makes it easy for beginners to navigate the app, regardless of their device.

PrivadoVPN comes with an automatic server selection feature, which analyzes network conditions and connects you to the optimal server based on your location and network performance.

The auto-connect feature ensures that you’re always protected when accessing the Internet. This automatic safeguard is particularly valuable for those who might forget to activate their VPN manually.

PrivadoVPN also includes a split tunneling, called SmartRoute, which allows users to easily choose which apps use the VPN connection.

Additionally, the Control Tower suite offers comprehensive protection, including parental controls, ad blocking, and defense against online threats.

Security and Privacy

PrivadoVPN employs industry-standard AES-256 encryption and includes a robust kill switch. You can choose from multiple protocols, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard, allowing you to balance security and speed as you become more familiar with VPN technology.
PrivadoVPN operates under privacy-friendly Swiss jurisdiction and maintains a strict no-logs policy. However, like TotalVPN, this policy hasn’t been independently audited yet.

The service also offers DNS leak protection and an option to use PrivadoVPN’s secure DNS servers, further safeguarding your privacy. For added anonymity, the SOCKS5 proxy feature provides an extra layer of protection, beneficial for P2P activities.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

PrivadoVPN operates a compact network of 300+ servers across 49 countries. While not the largest fleet, it provides sufficient coverage for most beginners’ needs.

PrivadoVPN provides access to several popular streaming platforms, including Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. However, you might encounter difficulties when unblocking certain services, such as Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video.

Additionally, its servers are optimized for P2P and streaming, and the service works in some restricted areas like China.

Performance

For most users, particularly beginners, PrivadoVPN’s performance offers an excellent balance of speed and reliability.

During the testing, I’ve examined two protocols: OpenVPN and WireGuard. OpenVPN achieved speeds of 12-13% of the base speed. While adequate for basic browsing and streaming, this falls short of top competitors.

However, the WireGuard protocol significantly boosted performance, with speeds reaching 60-72% of the baseline.

Pricing

PrivadoVPN provides three main subscription options:

24 months + 3 free 12 months + 3 free 1 month
PrivadoVPN $1.99/month $2.99/month $10.99/month

All plans include the same features, with longer subscriptions offering significant discounts. PrivadoVPN also offers a generous free plan with 10GB of monthly data and access to 12 server locations, perfect testing the service without committing.

Additionally, all paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Who It's Best For

PrivadoVPN is ideal for VPN beginners who need an affordable, easy-to-use service with essential features.

Pros

  • Intuitive interface
  • Affordable pricing
  • Generous free plan
  • Optimized servers for streaming and P2P

Cons

IPVanish – Best VPN for Smartphone Users

Best For Smartphone Usage
Server Network 2,400 servers in 50+ countries
Compatibility Windows, Mac, iOS, Android
Max Devices Unlimited
Price Starting from $2.19/month

Why I Picked It

IPVanish is an excellent VPN for smartphone users due to its robust mobile apps, unlimited simultaneous connections, and strong performance on cellular networks. It offers a seamless experience for protecting your mobile data and accessing geo-restricted content on the go.

Features

IPVanish offers a range of features tailored for mobile users. The Auto-connect on startup provides immediate protection when your device is turned on. While the On-Demand feature connects the VPN when accessing untrusted networks, ensuring device security. This is particularly valuable for users who frequently switch between Wi-Fi networks.

To optimize performance, server sorting by ping time helps mobile users quickly find the fastest connections. Functional split tunneling allows users to customize the VPN connection and route specific apps through the VPN while others use the regular connection.

The obfuscation feature masks VPN traffic as regular internet traffic to help bypass strict network and geographical restrictions, like in China.

Additionally, Siri Shortcuts integration enables iOS users to make quick VPN connections through voice commands.

Security and Privacy

IPVanish utilizes AES-256 encryption and offers a range of protocols, including IKEv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, with IKEv2 being particularly well-suited for mobile devices.

However, IPVanish is based in the United States, a member of the Five Eyes alliance. While this might raise some concern, the company maintains a strict no-logs policy, which has been independently audited.

For additional mobile security, IPVanish offers DNS leak protection and IPv6 leak protection, ensuring that your smartphone’s real IP address and DNS queries remain hidden.

Server Fleet and Geo-unblocking

IPVanish has a server network with 2,200+ servers across 75+ different locations. In my tests, it successfully unblocked major streaming platforms on mobile devices, including Netflix (US, UK, and Canada libraries), BBC iPlayer, YouTube TV, and Disney+.

However, IPVanish was inconsistent in unblocking Amazon Prime Video and had difficulties with Hulu.

Despite this, I’d recommend IPVanish for gamers due to its specially optimized servers that help minimize latency and enhance the overall gaming experience.

Performance

During my performance tests with WireGuard, connections to US servers retained about 75% of the base speed for both download and upload. UK servers performed even better, with 79% retention for downloads and 82% for uploads. Even distant servers in Australia managed to maintain 79% of the base download speed, though upload speeds dropped to around 31%.

These results place IPVanish among the best VPNs for mobile.

Pricing

IPVanish offers plans that accommodate both short-term and long-term needs:

24 months + 3 free 12 months + 3 free 1 month
IPVanish $2.19/month $2.79/month $12.99/month

All plans come with unlimited simultaneous connections, making IPVanish a good value for users with multiple devices.

The service also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, except for the month-to-month plan. Plus, a 7-day free trial on iOS and Android devices is accessible through their respective app stores.

Who It's Best For

IPVanish’s unlimited connections and mobile apps make it perfect for individuals or families looking to protect multiple smartphones and tablets without compromising performance.

Pros

  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Optimized mobile apps with advanced features
  • Strong performance on smartphones

What is a VPN?

A VPN or a Virtual Private Network is a service that protects your online activities and personal data when browsing the web.

By creating a secure, encrypted tunnel, a VPN service guarantees that hackers, eavesdroppers, advertisers, and other third parties cannot steal your data and use it for their own benefit. Additionally, it allows you to change your original IP address, meaning you’ll be able to access news or geo-restricted content from anywhere in the world.

How Does a VPN Work?

In essence, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet. Once you connect to a VPN server, a secure connection is established between your device and the server. All the data that travels through this “tunnel” is encrypted, and it’s only decrypted when it reaches the server.

From there, decrypted requests are sent to the Internet, and once the response is found, this gets encrypted on the VPN server and sent back to your device. To learn more about the encryption process, check out our article on how VPNs work.

Why Do I Need VPN Protection?

You may be thinking that if you have nothing to hide, you don’t need a VPN – but they can still provide some extremely useful services for you without you going anywhere near anything shady.

At its core, a VPN – a virtual private network – allows you to anonymize your web activity by masking your IP address and making it invisible to your internet service provider (ISP). This stops hackers and advertisers from tracking your connection, keeping your traffic private and secure.

In an age where online privacy is increasingly under threat, best VPN solutions can serve as defenders of anonymity in the digital realm. By masking your IP address and encrypting your internet traffic, a VPN can shield your online activities from prying eyes, providing vital layers of protection and preserving your right to privacy.

Many people use public Wi-Fi without knowing that their data can easily be compromised. A VPN can keep your information safe from potential intruders. If you use restricted networks, a VPN can also help you to bypass firewalls and access blocked content.

Additionally, popular streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer are unavailable in many countries. A top VPN service can help you navigate geo-restrictions and access your favorite streaming content and content libraries that are unavailable from your location – and it can do all this without having any impact on your connection speed.

What Can You Use a VPN For?

Apart from enhancing your online security and making your internet traffic private, you can use a VPN for:

StreamingAccessing Geo-Restricted ContentGamingTorrenting

Streaming

Popular streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Max (previously known as HBO Max) often have different content libraries in different countries. Sometimes, shows are removed or added to said platforms due to new copyright or licensing agreements.

At the same time, platforms like Hulu and Paramount+ are available in the US alone.

So, a VPN is an irreplaceable tool for accessing all your favorite shows on any platform from any location.

Here are a few shows and sports events you can watch with a VPN:

Accessing Geo-Restricted Content

By changing your original IP address to a VPN server IP address, you make your internet traffic seem like it’s coming from that country.

This, in turn, enables you to access local sites, news portals, and online stores. This means you get to enjoy content from all over the globe without having to physically travel there.

Gaming

Regardless if you’re a casual gaming fan or a seasoned gamer, a VPN can help you access games that might be geo-restricted and unavailable in your area.

Sometimes, due to the large amount of resources used during the game, your ISP might throttle your connection, making it slower. By switching to a VPN server, you can bypass this throttling. The best VPN for Warzone can even help get Bot Lobbies easier.

Torrenting

Online file sharing, or torrenting, is another activity that requires an extra layer of security. When you torrent online, your real IP address is exposed to those using a P2P network.

By encrypting your traffic, a VPN masks your real IP address and your online activities, making the connection that much safer.

Which Top VPN Provider Is the Fastest?

A fast and lag-free connection is very important when using the internet. Ideally, you want the VPN to have no impact at all on your original broadband speed. However, since your internet traffic is rerouted via an additional VPN server, it’s only natural for some speed drop to occur.

The speed drop should be so minimal that a typical user wouldn’t even notice it, though. I have extensively tested the performance of our top 9 providers, and here’s how they compare in terms of upload and download speeds.

Average Download Speed Retention Average Upload Speed Retention
NordVPN 91.45% 79.96%
Surfshark 93.42% 87.65%
ExpressVPN 49.91% 52.55%
PureVPN 68.65% 59.96%
CyberGhost 64.16% 32.05%
ProtonVPN 60.45% 53.92%
TotalVPN 50.75% 63.85%
PrivadoVPN 68.90% 81.65%
IPVanish 69.75% 68.70%

Based on these findings, Surfshark and NordVPN are the fastest VPN providers, with the best speed retention results.

Are VPNs Safe to Use? What Makes VPNs Secure?

You may wonder whether VPNs are safe to use, and they’re generally perfectly safe to use daily. Premium VPNs are meant to enhance your online security by offering extensive security features and privacy measures.

However, not all VPNs are equally secure. For starters, free VPNs are often seen as security-compromising rather than enhancing tools. Free providers offer fewer security tools, push pop-up ads, and, in extreme cases, may even infect you with malicious software.

Because of this, I recommend opting for reliable and secure VPN software that includes:

  • Safe jurisdiction – Make sure your chosen VPN is based in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction that doesn’t legally require VPN providers to collect and store user data. NordVPN, which is based in Panama, is a good example of this.
  • No-log policy – A no-logs policy states that the provider doesn’t collect or store any of its user’s personal data or activity logs. While the majority of providers offer this privacy measure, only the ones that have undergone external auditing are proven to be secure.
  • RAM-only servers – Safe VPN providers often uses RAM-only servers, which are wiped clean after each reboot. This further ensures that no user data is stored on the provider’s end.
  • Encryption – By using the highly secure AES-256 encryption cypher, secure VPNs like Surfshark, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN encrypt user data, making it virtually impossible for third parties to access your personal data.
  • Kill switch – An automatic kill switch disconnects you from the internet immediately in the event the VPN connection fails. This way, your real IP address is never leaked, and your online activities remain safe.

It’s worth noting that some countries – like Belarus, Iraq, North Korea, and Turkmenistan – have made VPN use an illegal activity, so it’s unsafe to use VPNs in these regions. The consequences of using a VPN illegally may result in fines or even imprisonment, so be sure to check your local laws.

Are There Drawbacks to VPNs?

Using a VPN is a great way to browse the internet securely and privately and to get around surveillance and censorship from your government and your Internet Service Provider. That said, there are some minor downsides to using a VPN for private internet access.

  • Price – I don’t recommend using “free” services as they come with severe usage restrictions and, in the worst cases, may expose your data to malicious actors. This is obviously the exact opposite of what you want to happen if you’re seeking to secure your connection. Nevertheless, commercial providers do charge for their services – though it’s a relatively small amount of the service they deliver.
  • Connection speed – Due to the technicalities of rerouting your traffic, you may have a slight reduction in your connection speed. That said, the best VPN providers offer lightning-fast services, which are ideal for gaming and streaming, and split tunneling, so you can prioritize your encrypted traffic.
  • Legality – While using a VPN is fully legal in most parts of the world, some countries may limit or ban VPN use entirely. Some of the countries that actively ban VPN use are Belarus, Iraq, North Korea, and Turkmenistan. In addition, India, Russia, and China limit and heavily monitor VPN use. Because of this, it’s important to consider the law around VPN use in your region, as it could lead to fines or even imprisonment under restrictive legislation.

VPN Market Trends and Statistics

Due to new and emerging cyber security threats, internet users are always looking for effective ways to stay safe online. VPN software is an affordable but highly reliable tool, so it’s no surprise that the VPN market has seen constant growth, with a current market value standing at $45 billion.

Key Findings

  • Naturally, more and more people are becoming aware of VPN tools. 88% of Americans recognize what a VPN is and what it is used for, with general online security being the prime reason for use.
  • In the first half of 2023 (H1 2023), VPN downloads reached 130 million (Atlas VPN, 2023).
  • Global VPN stats for June 2023 noted that a high number of people were concerned about VPNs being safe. The most frequent concerns included a risk of malware infections (33%), zero-day exploits + APT (29%), and DDoS attacks (24%). However, participants have noted that they are less likely to have safety concerns if the VPN provider has a strong brand image and no prior data leak incidents.
  • Ease of use is another factor that concerns potential users, with nearly 21% of survey participants noting that the software is too difficult to set up. However, once users overcome the initial setup process, nearly 70% of end-users use a VPN daily or almost daily (Zscaler, 2023).

Overall, VPN statistics indicate that the market is constantly growing and attracting new users. While there are some anxieties around VPN use, VPN providers are constantly improving their services to better protect against online threats.

Free VPN vs. Paid VPN – Which Is Best for You?

Free VPNs come at a competitive price point, but they typically also have some major drawbacks. Free services often require you to watch ads, while others have limited bandwidth or server options and are intended to encourage you to upgrade to a paid VPN service. Due to that, free VPNs often aren’t suitable for streaming or torrenting.

John MasonFounder of TheBestVPN.com
EXPERT INSIGHT

“Some free VPN services collect user data and sell it to third-party advertising companies or the authorities. Before signing up, users should always check service policies and learn about how their data is being processed. A lot of potentially sensitive personal information is included in usage logs, and while most providers claim to run no-log VPN services, some of them may still maintain extensive connection logs. That’s a problem because third parties could use this information about your internet access to identify you.”

Based on my research, I identified PrivadoVPN and ProtonVPN as candidates for the best free VPN. ProtonVPN generally comes out ahead, though, offering access to servers in the US, the Netherlands, and Japan, and with no limitations on data use.

Even better, the provider includes a VPN kill switch with the free service – immediately cutting data transfer if the VPN connection drops, meaning your connection remains secure and private whatever happens.

Nevertheless, while free virtual private networks can do an adequate job of hiding your IP address when visiting sites, they fall short when compared to paid VPN plans, so it’s better to look for an affordable plan rather than a free solution.

Subscribing to a cheap VPN service will generally give you access to thousands of servers spread around the world – including for countries like Turkey, Russia, and China.

How to Find the Best VPN Service

VPN service providers typically offer their customers a variety of privacy options and VPN security features, including support for different encryption protocols and the ability to connect to servers in specific countries.

The effectiveness and reliability of a VPN service can vary based on several factors, including the provider’s VPN hardware and the network infrastructure they are using. When evaluating a VPN service provider, there are several key features to consider:

SecurityLoggingPerformanceDevice Support

Security

The VPN service should include a VPN firewall, access to the best VPN protocols, and strong encryption, such as AES-256, to protect data from unauthorized access.

The best VPN providers use VPN tokens to provide an additional layer of authentication and security within the VPN service. Many enterprise versions also provide leak protection features to prevent client IP addresses from being exposed.

For additional security features, see our guide to the best antiviruses with VPN functionality, including providers such as TotalAV.

Logging

The VPN service should have a strict no-logs policy that clearly states that the provider doesn’t keep information about user activity.

The best VPN providers are transparent about their quality assurance tests and have their logging practices independently audited by reputable third parties.

Performance

The VPN service should provide fast connection speeds so that users don’t experience latency issues when they are using a VPN for torrenting, streaming video, or playing online games.

The best VPN services have a wide range of server locations, provide unlimited bandwidth, and use VPN concentrators to efficiently create and manage VPN connections. It’s also worth considering the number of servers and whether the service offers servers optimized for specific use cases.

Device Support

The VPN service should be compatible with computers, smartphones, and tablets. A top 10 VPN service will have a user-friendly interface and provide good customer support.

Conclusion – What Is the Best VPN?

There is a wide range of virtual private networks to choose from today, and the best VPN service providers face tough competition. Nevertheless, there are a handful of market leaders who deliver truly outstanding service in terms of speed, safety, security, and trustworthiness.

I have picked the best VPN for each use case and created a shortlist that caters to a range of needs. Whichever you choose, though, you won’t regret it.

However, based on my research and test results, I recommend NordVPN as the best solution for most users. It offers a perfect variety of security tools for a very reasonable price. Plus, it’s often cited as the best premium VPN service on the market. So try it now, risk-free, with its generous money-back guarantee.
