Southbound US 183 reopens following deadly crash involving cyclist in East Austin

The crash shut down all southbound lanes for several hours late Friday afternoon.

AUSTIN, Texas — All lanes have reopened following a deadly crash on southbound US 183 near Highway 290, according to officials.

Austin-Travis County EMS reported the deadly crash just before 4:30 p.m. Friday after a vehicle and bicycle collided. ACTEMS said an adult was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Austin Police Department said just before 4 p.m., officers responded to a crash between a vehicle and a cyclist in the 7400 block. The unidentified cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, was not impaired, and is cooperating with the investigation, APD said.

The southbound lanes of US 183 were closed for several hours as ACTEMS and Austin police investigated. The roadway reopened just before 7 p.m.

The incident is being investigated as Austin's 25th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 25 deaths for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 34 fatal crashes resulted in 34 deaths.
